LAAND presents
Listen Closely
an unamplified evening with
Jason Anderson
Heidi Gluck
June Henry
How do I tell you that this will likely be the best show you’ll see this year without being hyperbolic?
Whenever I book a gig, I know that there’s always a good number of folks who consider attending but probably just decide, “I’ll catch the next one.” But I’m here to tell you that there’s not a next one. It only happens once. A Jason Anderson show is about being in that moment, in a room full of people, all with the full knowledge that this gathering cannot be duplicated. This collection of people – performers and audience alike – will never be in the same room together again. And that’s why Jason goes so fucking hard and why I’d like to suggest you be in the room when it happens.
Jason Anderson is a DIY touring legend known for his moving and memorable shows. He’s collaborated with Mount Eerie, toured with Joyce Manor, and released albums on K Records and Salinas. Personal and passionate, Jason’s music crackles with life. Seeing him play is what I imagine it was like to see Bruce Springsteen when he was 20 years old and really wanted it.
The last time Jason played in Lawrence was at the ol’ Wonder Fair – above the Burger Stand – where he led the entire crowd downstairs and out onto the sidewalk for an encore on Mass Street. People who were there – 12+ years ago now – still ask me about the show and good news for them and for everyone else: Jason is coming back to LFK.
Also performing are two of Lawrence’s heaviest hitters: Heidi Lynne Gluck and June Henry. Heidi is the musician in town that all the other musicians fawn over because she knocks out hit after unassuming hit like it’s NBD. A local treasure if there ever was one. June Henry is our viciously hilarious folk-punk princess. She’s been playing LAAND shows since she was 14 and now she’s fresh off her first 2-week tour of the UK. As a matter of civic pride, all dutiful Lawrencians should be familiar with these two artists and, if you’re not, then please mark your calendar for this extra-intimate opportunity to become acquainted with them.
The music you hear on this evening will be human in scale. As tech companies have forced culture into a hustle for infinitely scaleable content, we have removed the microphones. There is no scalability beyond this one room. Listen closely to the human voice. The three artists performing this evening all make music that is meaningful and real. It will be joyful and sad. Beautiful and messy. In fact, this music will cover a wide range of human emotions, completely unfiltered by the algorithms that have come to guide our daily lives. Come prepared to feel things and to experience the wonder of music.
